DCS Parents, Guardians and Staff:

As you may have read or heard on the news, there is a rally taking place at the statehouse on Tuesday, November 19 called Red For Ed. This event is being organized by the Indiana Federation of Teachers (IFT) and the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA) to bring attention to concerns they believe diminish their profession and compromise public education.

Due to the large number of teachers requesting personal days to attend the event and anticipating more requests as the day approaches, we will be cancelling school on November 19. We regret the disruption this may cause for you and your family, but with reduced staffing, we are unable to ensure students will receive a quality day of learning in a safe environment.

This decision was not made lightly. We examined as many options as possible and believe that this decision will provide the best educational alternative for our students. In keeping with that, school will now be in session on our first Flex Day, January 20, 2020.

As previously communicated, it is our intention to use eLearning days for weather related closures.

We understand the burdens that are placed on our educators and share a number of their expressed concerns, including the unhealthy focus on high stakes testing, a curricular structure that adds to student stress while often diminishing the joy of learning, and unfunded mandates, just to name a few.

Thank you for understanding and your continuing support of our students, staff and schools.

Sincerely,

Paul Garrison

Superintendent
